Nothing has changed under English Labour
I came across a letter I wrote back in November, 2022 when Rishi Sunak had just been appointed Prime Minister (published in the Edinburgh Evening News and the Dundee Courier) and realised I could write exactly the same letter today, substituting Keir Starmer for Sunak and English Labour for the Tories.
It just goes to show how the ‘change’ promised by English Labour is more of the same neoliberal garbage that has drained wealth and hope from ordinary people while enriching the plutocrats who are running this sad little state into the ground. The UK is weak and growing weaker. The Scottish People should seize this moment to leave.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claims there’s a financial ‘black hole’ that needs to be plugged via tax increases and more austerity. He’s wrong. There can’t be any ‘holes’ in government spending because the government’s bank, the Bank of England, can be ordered by the Treasury to create all the money the government needs. This is what happened during the pandemic when £400 billion was immediately made available to support the economy. It’s that simple.
Yet the government and the media persist in peddling lies that there is no more money, that taxes fund government spending, and that ruinous tax rises and public spending cuts are required.
So why the lies? The Tories hate the public sector. They’ve sold off most of it during their years in power, aided and abetted by Blair’s New Labour - energy, water (in England), transport, heavy industry, the postal service, and now the NHS.
It’s the same old story – the wealthy few are profiting at the expense of the many. The goal has been the destruction of the post-war welfare state and the job is nearly done. The plutocrats have their man in Downing Street, Rishi Sunak, the richest PM ever, who is eager to do their bidding and complete the strangulation of the public sector. It’s why the UK is one of the poorest countries in Western Europe.
Scotland can either stay in this union and become even poorer, or end it and choose the people over plutocrats, investment over austerity and openness over isolation.
Absolutely well said Leah. Seeing that Sarwar unelected MSP and leader of LabourUK in Scotland is being given main platform at STV etc as if he is FM of Scotland, a coup by media really.
The anti SNP, cancelling SNP, keeping the real FM off the main 'media' as much as possible unless very negative SNP bad is orchestrated, will be wall to wall until Scottish election takes place.
Scotland is surely up against a powerful rich state next door intent on keeping Scotland shackeld to GBritUKEngland, and resources taken (stolen) by them. Yikes.
