Viceroy Murray, the obsequious Lieutenant Shanks and 33 other English Labour MPs squatting in Scotland voted to axe the universal Winter Fuel Allowance. Two abstained.
Starmer claims it will pay off - just give it 10 years. How stupid does he think we are?
Straining to sound intelligent, he told Laura Kuenssberg why pensioners (and everyone bar the wealthy) are suffering:
“Talking to many pensioners …, the things that have hit the most and hardest are inflation, because it got out of control under the last government, energy bills, because the steps that were needed to be taken years ago weren’t taken, and the cost of living.”
Inflation rose because of external shocks: reopening after Covid and the Ukraine war that sparked speculation in raw materials. But inflation always cools once the shocks have worked through the system, and that’s what happened. Further, the Bank of England’s raising interest rates to ‘control’ inflation exacerbated it because businesses passed on higher debt servicing costs to customers.
Energy bills shot up because the Ukraine war cut off Europe’s access to cheap Russian gas and drove up prices. And the US blowing up the Nordstream pipeline, the world’s biggest act of eco-terrorism, dealt a body blow to Germany’s economy, weakening a US economic competitor.
As for the “steps that were needed”, one was Starmer’s promise to renationalise energy, which would have prevented profiteering. Others were to tax Big Oil at 78% like Norway and to stop using expensive gas to price electricity, and use regional pricing instead. Then Scots would pay the lowest electricity prices in Europe.
Finally, there’s Brexit’s contribution to the cost of living. Food is more expensive, Scotland lost £3 billion a year in public funding and Scottish beef and lamb will be displaced by inferior Australia and New Zealand products.
Flynn and his dwindling band of MPs need to leave the Westminster cesspit, hightail it home and join the fight to liberate their nation.
How many of us pensioners will still be alive in ten years time? Not many, if we get a couple of cold winters!
