A benefit of being independent is that you don’t have another nation telling you what you can and can’t do - unless that nation happens to be Israel (but then, I hope an independent Scotland would refuse to be bullied by the genocidal ethno-state).
But I digress. The indefatigable Ferret has revealed MOD emails to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) asking it not to publish damning information over the last nine years on radiation leaks from its rust bucket nuclear subs lurking in the Clyde for fear that this would compromise ‘national security.’
And lo and behold, SEPA has complied like a good colonial vassal. However, before 2016, SEPA regularly published details of radiation leaks at Faslane and Coulport.
But the reports were proving embarrassing to the MOD so it lowered the boom on SEPA and has been censoring the reports ever since. The emails were obtained by a FOI request but the Ferret has disclosed that SEPA is still withholding some, citing “site security, public safety and national defence security.”
Campbell Gemmell, SEPA CEO from 2003-2012, recalled that during his tenure the MOD constantly pressured SEPA to keep radiation leaks secret.
Other cheery nuclear news. The National Audit Office has released figures on cleanup costs for the toxic Sellafield nuclear reprocessing facility in Cumbria - Europe’s nuclear waste dump - that has been polluting the west coast of Scotland for years, contaminating marine life and driving up cancer rates. The estimate now is £136b, an increase of 18% from the 2019 estimate. The Sellafield complex is a huge collection of aging buildings never designed to hold toxic nuclear waste long-term.
The clean-up of three of Sellafield’s most deadly nuclear ‘ponds’ that are oozing hazardous sludge, is running 13 years behind. One of these ‘ponds’ is leaking 2,100 litres of poisonous water daily.
The understatement of the century was uttered by the National Audit Office’s Gareth Davies:
“I cannot conclude Sellafield is achieving value for money yet, as large projects are being delivered later than planned and at higher cost, alongside slower progress in reducing multiple risks.”
And English Labour is hellbent on building more nuclear facilities, forcing them onto Scotland, and keeping the leaking nuclear rust bucket subs moored on the Clyde, far from England.
England’s last colonial outpost, Scotland, exists for the erstwhile empire to not only exploit and rob blind, but also to poison, so that if we ever manage to extricate ourselves from its murderous vice grip, we’ll have a hell of a job on our hands to clean things up.
I knew an American nuclear sub captain who informed me that the radioactive level at the Scottish base wa higher than in his submarine. He attributed that to contamination from the submarines. This would have been about fifty years ago - so I’m afraid this is nothing new. The greater risk now perhaps is from nuclear war given the current Westminster policies. We must urgently get out from under UK (English) and US control as a matter of Scottish national security.
That Gareth Davies' 'understatement' is just mindbogglingly, devil may care attitude. Crikey. You can just imagine the discussions and howls of laughter when the EngGov plotted to make Scotland a dumping ground for their nukes and nuke waste.
I read years ago that there was a plan to poss sink some nuclear waste in big underground storage tanks below Sellafield, but, they realised it's far too seismologically (if that's the right word!) unstable for that.
Humans have really messed up haven't they.
