Scotland's English Labour MPs obey Herr Starmer
While 7 brave and principled Labour MPs from England defied the Dear Leader
Published in the July 29th Edition of The Edinburgh Evening News.
All 37 of Scotland’s English Labour MPs, led by Viceroy Murray, voted against the SNP amendment to end the two-child benefit cap. Only seven MPs from English constituencies (along with six Independents, four Greens, and 64 LibDems) had the moral courage to support it. To show how tough he is, Starmer suspended the whip on the rebels.
This is morally and socially wrong and economically illiterate.
No child should live in poverty in a state as rich as the UK. Yet 31% of English children live in poverty, whereas 24% of Scottish children do thanks to the Child Payment. Benefits do reduce poverty.
Households affected by the cap will lose 10% of their average income and 22% of average benefit income. When fully rolled out, it will impact 1 in 5 children (2.8 million). Ending the cap should be the first thing government does if it were serious about ending child poverty.
Second, the cap discourages larger families when the UK’s birthrate is falling. In Scotland it’s just 1.3, well below replacement and moving towards extinction. Starmer will also retain the Tory anti-immigration policy, so the UK population will not only decline but also become poorer.
Third, English Labour says they don’t have the money. Absurd. Ending the cap would cost £1.7 billion, a drop in the ocean. The government owns a central bank so can create as much money as it wants. It effortlessly funds wars and wasted £700 million deporting 4 people to Rwanda. Furthermore, it’s well established that when the poor have more money they spend it, boosting growth. Rachel Reeves says she’s all about encouraging growth, right?
Starmer made a political choice to beggar the UK’s future because he owes allegiance to his donors, not to the people. It’s why Scotland must end this failing union.
So, Murray and his band of 36 English Labour MPs representing Scotland, vote AGAINST change. If only The People of Scotland had seen that one coming……
Yes the Scottish Child Payment of £25 per week per child has reduced child poverty, which I presume on Labour's watch in Scotland and at Westminster was much higher than that of England.
I don't quite get it though, is it becuase Labour presume most people don't give a damn about children living, existing rather, in poverty? Little children going hungry, is clearly not on some peoples' list of societal concerns including Labour MP's who live on, actually live not just survive, on what, £100k per year. I'd have thought Labour MP's operating in Scotland would not want the people of Scotland to see them for what they are, a mere branch office, taking orders from their masters in London. Hmm.
Prof John at Talking Up Scotland has an article about a brand new LabEngLabour in Scotland MP who 'works daily with children and young people in some of the affected communities' re poverty, who er just voted to keep the two child cap. Wow! She promised before the UK/GB/British General election held by England to 'address child poverty in Scotland', and people believed her lies, that's the scary part. As Prof John says, 'betrayal and moral decay'. It's a huge two fingers gesture at the voters, at Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock.
I wonder if LabourUKEngGB party might be keeping ending the two child cap to just before the Scottish election in 2026? Orchestrating and claiming that 'Scottish' Labour instigated such. Or it could be that Starmer's right wing Labour party just does not care one jot about starving children in his GB not so great.
Kidstarver has certainly proven he is just that, a selfish, greedy, lying, child poverty enabler. Disgraceful.
