Just over a year ago, a group of pro-independence volunteers in Dunfermline had an idea - to create a series of videos featuring “future voices” from an independent Scotland. They wanted to counter the common unionist trope that Scotland is ‘too wee, too poor and too stupid' to stand on its own two feet.
During Phase One of the project dubbed “Future Voices,” the group produced seven short videos featuring ordinary Scots speaking in the present tense from a future independent Scotland. Each speaker in these small vignettes exudes confidence and optimism and provides us with a tantalising glimpse of how much more rewarding and prosperous life could be in a nation that has not only reclaimed its independence but has settled into it comfortably.
Each of the short video clips, along with brief ‘trailers’, has been published on a dedicated YouTube channel, Future Voices - YouTube. The trailers are being promoted on several social media platforms. The aim is to provide the widest possible distribution of this positive view from the future to those already committed to independence and those yet to be convinced.
The first seven videos in this groundbreaking series explore the following themes:
The response to this motivational and innovative project has been uniformly positive across the independence movement. The series, filmed in the Central Belt, has been featured in the pages of The National, on several podcasts and at a recent Believe in Scotland (BiS) Congress.
Encouraged by this response, the group is now planning a second series to be filmed in other parts of our diverse nation and is engaging with groups in Aberdeen, Dumfries and Galloway, Highlands and Islands, and Orkney. But this requires money and a crowdfunder has been launched to help raise the necessary funds.
Please help spread the word about Future Voices by liking, sharing and subscribing to the YouTube Channel. And please take time to share and, if you are able, donate to the crowdfunder. Every donation, no matter how small, will help to make a second series a reality!
We all need to feel confident and assured about how much better life could be for us, our children and grandchildren, in a free Scotland. This project contributes towards fostering that assurance.
Excellent post, Leah - thanks a lot !
