The EU's brazen authoritarianism
We did it in Romania, and obviously we will do it in Germany.
Is anyone surprised that there was no outrage in the western lamestream media when the Romanian presidential elections were nullified last month?
Annulling an election in an EU member state has never ever happened. On December 6th, Romania’s Constitutional Court (CCR) cancelled the election while second round voting was taking place in the diaspora. It justified its decision with the claim that Russia interfered in the first round voting on November 24th when independent candidate Calin Georgescu came out on top, stunning the political establishment.
That’s because Georgescu ran on a pro-peace platform. He was poised to win the 2nd round on December 8th and to become president. Clearly, his anti-war message struck a chord with the Romanian people. That’s when the CCR ruling came down like an iron fist, crushing Romanian democracy.
The claim of Russian interference was based on a set of intelligence reports submitted to a closed National Security Council meeting on November 28th, which were then declassified on December 4th and made available to the Constitutional Court to help them come to the ‘right’ decision - to annul the elections. However, the reports contained no concrete evidence that the Russian Federation interfered in the elections nor did they provide any evidence of links between Georgescu and Russia.
The pro-EU ruling coalition says it will re-run the election on May 4th and 18th and back a single presidential candidate to keep Georgescu out. Their preferred candidate is former Liberal leader, Crin Antonescu. Until then, the current President Klaus Iohannis will remain in power.
Thousands of Romanians have taken to the streets in protest. Romanians are angry and not just the ones who voted for Georgescu.
Romania is not only an EU but also a NATO member. Both institutions weren’t going to allow an anti-war candidate to win the Romanian presidency. So they stepped in to cancel democracy - a coup, if you like.
Here’s why NATO was so spooked. It’s building its largest military base in Europe in Romania - the Mihail Kogalniceanu base on the Black Sea opposite Crimea.
Romania hosts 2 other NATO military bases: the Deveselu Military Base, which is home to the Aegis Ashore Ballistic Missile Defense System, and Airbase 71 which is located in central Romania and has recently had a $100m upgrade.
NATO and the EU can’t afford to lose their investment in Romania which is a forward base from which to engage in Ukraine and Moldova and from which it could fire missiles into Russia.
Georgescu’s support stems from Romanians not liking the fact that their country is being used by NATO to continue the Ukraine war and to serve as a springboard for future wars, including a war that would end human life on the planet.
The Romanians aren’t alone. The people of Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria have all elected leaders who oppose the Ukraine war and don’t want a war with Russia. This is, of course, unsettling to the EU and NATO.
Now there’s even talk of annulling the forthcoming German elections in February should the people ‘make the wrong choice.’ Thierry Breton, former EU Commissioner, admitted the EU was behind the Romanian election annulment and has threatened to do the same in Germany.

The unelected bureaucrats presiding over the EU machinery from Brussels have become exceptionally brazen. They don’t even try to hide their intent to undermine democracy. They increasingly resemble the old Soviet Politburo that selected regional first secretaries for their loyalty. However, the difference between the USSR and the EU is that the former was a sovereign state whereas the EU is supposed to serve its sovereign member states.
The EU will do anything to keep the US in Europe, even nullify democratic elections. It knows that NATO will collapse without US support, along with Europe’s global relevance.
However, the EU’s move to authoritarianism will backfire. More people across Europe will take to the streets to protest their falling living standards, the lies they’ve been told and the wars they’ve had foisted upon them by faceless EU bureaucrats, feckless national leaders and the NATO war machine.
The failing UK is on the same downward trajectory and is more isolated. Its leaders are incapable of accepting that they no longer rule an empire but a small and increasingly poor and insecure island state whose days are numbered.
On the other side of the Atlantic, a new American administration has taken office because a significant majority of Americans are sick of war and want their government to focus on them and their needs for once.
It remains to be seen whether President Trump can make good on his inaugural promise to be a peacemaker:
"We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into… my proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and a unifier.”
If he succeeds, even partially, and I’m hoping he does, Americans will be better off and the world a less dangerous place. And who knows? The nations of Europe may learn to stand on their own two feet and govern on behalf of their people.
It seems that the neo-liberal capitalist world is in a panic and has had to drop the liberal mask in its desperation to stop the international collapse of its domination.
