The UK/EU have nothing to offer on Ukraine
Just more of the same, which is why they're not included in talks to end the war
French President Macron, who said that supporting Ukraine is France’s absolute priority, convened an ‘emergency meeting’ in Paris today where EU leaders and the UK’s Starmer, like petulant children, will do little more than vent their frustration at being excluded from preliminary talks between Russia and the US in Saudi Arabia next week.
Europe is being left out in the cold because it brings nothing to the table except doing more of the same which has failed.
Despite US VP Vance and Defence Secretary Hegseth telling European leaders that Ukraine won’t join NATO, Keir Starmer still insists that it will. He’s also vowed to continue to throw £3bn a year at the corrupt Zelensky regime (remember that 100-year partnership he so brilliantly negotiated last month?) and even commit to sending UK troops.
UK spooks have been busy, too. The MI6 cell known as Project Alchemy was created in February 2022 to carry out a series of covert operations “to keep Ukraine fighting” by imposing “strategic dilemmas, costs and frictions upon Russia.” Staffed with experienced military and intelligence operatives, it has been staging false flag events with the goal of igniting a hot war between the West and Russia. It was behind the bombing of the Kerch Bridge.
Then there’s the yapping Estonian chihuahua, Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who insists the war must go on, as does Germany’s wannabe Chancellor, CDU’s Friedrich Merz.
The EU Queen herself, Ursula Von der Leyen, called for an emergency clause to allow member states to ramp up defence spending without falling foul of EU budget deficit limits.
However, there are less gung-ho and even dissident voices within this supposed pro-war monolith of ‘European unity’.
Poland’s Donald Tusk has no plan to send troops to Ukraine.
The Netherlands’ PM Dick Schoof said he’s ‘not negative’ about deploying troops but said it must be backed by the US which Vice President Vance has emphatically ruled out.
Slovakia’s Robert Fico is more blunt, saying EU officials have no mandate for involvement in Ukraine talks, and their participation would damage confidence in the EU.
Hungary, long a critic of the EU’s rabid pro-war stance, welcomes the resumption of US/Russian diplomacy after the Biden administration’s refusal to speak to Moscow for three years. (By the way, even in the depths of the Cold War, the communications channel between Washington and Moscow was always open and frequently used. )
Europe is incapable of speaking with a single voice despite Von der Leyen’s best efforts. She has tried to use Ukraine as the glue to hold together a fractious union and now with a new US ‘Sheriff in town’, it’s coming unstuck.
Unity isn’t possible because Europe is, after all, a collection of sovereign nation states, some of which are finally pushing back against the EU Commission’s centralisation of power under Von der Leyen. Both the Russians and the US regard Europe as ‘agreement incapable’ for good reason.
The warmongering EU elites are out of touch with their people, who are tired of this futile and bloody war and who oppose increasing defence spending for Ukraine. Their living standards have fallen and now their putative leaders are asking them to give up even more for a conflict that has killed over a million young Ukrainians. It explains why political parties that oppose the war and want to instead focus on domestic problems are on the rise throughout Europe.
If Europe, and I include the UK in this, wants to be a part of the emerging multipolar world order, it needs to shed its Cold War mentality and put in its place cooperation and trade. It needs to face up to the fact that the US is turning away, leaving it to choose between growing up or being left completely out in the cold.
As for Zelensky, he’ll do what he’s told.
Sending British troops into the heart of the former Soviet Union to bolster a failed and corrupt regime beggars belief.
This is another ideal opportunity for the Scottish Parliament to break with Westminster. An utterly stupid, dangerous and highly unpopular UK policy. Holyrood could vote a resolution condemning it. Totally illegal under the terms of The Scotland Act. The PM could not tolerate such disobedience- then we would see where the chips lie!
A very appropriate photo of the collection of clowns running the EU Leah, if it wasn't so TRAGIC the loss of all the young lives from both sides was absolutely avoidable
It is reprehensible that these warhawks like Starmer and Von der Leyen want to continue this despicable situation and the very thought that they have been brushed aside like children doesn't even register with them
The usa arranged this war and just like the other times when winning was unachievable they just walk away and leave total carnage in their wake
