The UK's post-imperial hangover
Andrew HN Gray (letters, Scotsman, June 5) is wrong on at least three counts.
First, he claims that Russia is pointing nuclear weapons at the UK. While he provides no evidence for this assertion, there is evidence that NATO has Aegis ballistic missiles in Poland and Romania pointed at Russia.
Second, Russian forces aren’t in Ukraine because Ukraine gave up its nukes. They’re there because the United States expanded NATO up to Russia’s borders despite its promise in 1990 not to move NATO one inch eastward.
Since then, 16 more countries have joined NATO.
Ukraine was the final straw. In 2008, the then US ambassador to Russia, William Burns, told Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice that “Ukrainian entry into NATO is the brightest of all red lines for the Russian elite.”
Third, the nuclear weapons never belonged to Ukraine but to the USSR. After the breakup of the USSR, Ukraine didn’t have the ability to use the weapons because they were under Moscow’s control. Nor did it have the facilities to dismantle or maintain them.
Finally, England is welcome to the Rolls Royce welding jobs along with the rusting, leaking and toxic nuclear hulks that have polluted Scotland’s land and seas for decades. Scotland will be free, democratic, secure and independent only when it decides to break out of its UK prison.
The real aggressive, imperialist power isn’t Russia but the United States and its faithful UK lapdog, still suffering from a post-imperial hangover.
Ah yes the english nationalists in Scotland want to dump even more nuclear waste in Scotland , its a no brainer that any nuclear weapons or nuclear power stations the english government in westminster buy will eventually be dumped in Scotland just like they have done already.
As for Russia being a nuclear threat to the UK as said by H.N Gray in the Scotsman newspaper on 5/6/25 i would like to correct Mr Gray and point out the obvious which is that englands westminster has killed more people in the UK with their nuclear stuff than Russia ever has , all over the UK we have nuclear waste lying in storage in rotting containers that leak into our rivers and pastures.H.N.Gray clearly has no idea what he is talking about , just another british bulldog union jack waving fool thank goodness they are as dumb as they sound.
Part of the problem with Ukraine and also the Middle East is that the British media simply doesn’t tell the full facts about the situation and the vast majority of the population can’t seem to remember what politicians did and said last week, let alone years ago, and they also can’t seem to be able to do any research into anything. Look up anything, research it, show people, and what do you get, oh, it wasn’t in the paper, and the BBC didn’t say any of that, and I have an additional problem with this because I have profound hearing loss and so they say, maybe you misheard, and I say, I watch on subtitles and I lip read. Anyhow, so far the only people I know that seem to actually agree with me are a woman over 80, a trans friend and two teenage relations.
