English Labour pledged to put “Scotland at the heart of a government that will deliver the real change that Scotland needs.”
It didn’t take long for the British State’s new Scottish Viceroy to backtrack on that pledge. Ian Murray won’t commit to respecting Scotland’s wishes not to have any more nuclear power plants and referenced England’s Hinkley Point and Sizewell stations for ‘reassurance.’
Hinkley Point C has been plagued by delays and cost overruns. It was to come on stream in 2017 and cost £18 billion but has been delayed until 2031 and will cost £46 billion, meaning higher energy bills.
Sizewell C has been delayed 6 years and its costs have more than doubled, burdening households with higher bills. Located on the Suffolk coast which is prone to flooding and erosion, it will generate 26,880 tonnes of radioactive waste for which there is no safe disposal.
Scotland has two nuclear plants. Torness will be shut down 2 years early in 2028, and Hunterston B ceased operation in 2022. Both are aging, cracked, leaking albatrosses that have polluted the land and water.
Scotland already suffers from Trident at Faslane and Coulport where the MOD regularly discharges radioactive waste into the Firth of Clyde. Waste from Sellafield, Europe’s most toxic plant, contaminates shellfish on Scotland’s west coast and contributes to Scotland’s higher cancer rates.
Nuclear power is expensive and dangerous. Scotland doesn’t need it. By 2030, we’ll generate 124 billion Kilowatts of cheap and clean renewable energy, far more than we can use. It’s worth £billions but has been sold off to corporations and foreign governments and is being cabled to England for which Scotland receives nothing.
Aren’t we tired of being bullied and abused by another nation? It’s time to end the union.
