Without a strong independent media, the story, narrative and context is easy to control. Conjecture and innuendo can then direct the public conclusion, to a different conclusion than the one where truth and free thought would have taken the majority.
When Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, I was waiting for an analysis of what had gone on in the background leading up to the annexation. I knew that there was an agreement in place, but I had to look up the details myself (Kharkiv Pact), no mention was made of any treaty or pact in the media.
Reading some of the details, you realise why it was never discussed, analysed by the MSM. Too many questions would arise and it would be counter to the narrative of the story they wanted to enter the ears of the public.
Yes, you're right. The MSM won't give the context of the conflict, it won't examine the agreements broken by the west, NATO's relentless post cold war expansion along Russia's border. Bringing Ukraine into NATO was to complete the encirclement of Russia. It, the 2014 coup in Kiev, the 12 CIA bases inside Ukraine, the fabricated 'Russiagate' scandal in the US (dreamed up by the CIA and the Hillary Clinton campaign to link Trump to Putin - all lies). I'm actually amazed Russia was patient for so long. And now with Nuland's firing (she was fired although they say she has 'retired'), the US is losing interest in the failed Ukraine project and is moving on to China. Nuland's replacement is a China specialist. The next US war - Taiwan? The maw of the military industrial complex must be continuously fed.
The Wagner leader Pyrgozin before his death let the cat out of the bag when he said there was no attack of real substance on Eastern Ukraine by Ukrainian forces and that yes his troops invaded in 2014. The fact that it was so easy for his Men to take over the place testifies to it. The Tories in the UK at that time were all welcoming to the Russian oligarchs and when the invasion happened in 2014 the Tory Bruges Group and the European Research Group the were calling Ukraine a "failed state.
Thanks for your comment Alex. I take it that you agree that people who have a distinct culture and languarge in any state have a right to have their claim for independence status at least considered, and not be attacked for expressing their views on that. I do not think there is such a threat to any community in Scotland, in the Borders, or in Shetland for that matter, so I do not think such a "problem" exists in Scotland or will exist in an independent Scotland, and I for one would bitterly oppose any such aggression against any group in Scotland who wanted to have their own independent area.

"the people in the east of Ukraine, who happen to be mainly Russian speakers, are entitled to have a peaceful independent state if they so determine."
Substitute Scottish borders for "east of Ukraine" and English accents for "Russian" and you may realise OUR problem with that premise...
