In his recent Scotsman column, Stephen Gethins MP demonstrates his woeful ignorance about geopolitics and history, and exemplifies the execrable quality of UK MPs.
Sorry but where have you been?... they have been in charge for some considerable time... and they clearly have now shafted what sympathy they had after WW 2.. no matter how many movies come out of Holywood...
Until quite recently I have been getting my news from MSM. I grew miffed at not being able to get reliable information about Scottish Independence so I fixed that pretty well by subscribing to Leah’s ‘Dear Scotland’. The penny dropped as far as MSM was concerned and I cancelled my TV subscription and put the licence fee towards an ad free YouTube. What a great idea. It’s quite shocking though, to find out at the age of 78 that what you believed all your life to be true is nothing but pie in the sky. Fairy stories to keep people like me happy and quiet. But no more…😉
Good idea the switching of the tax they charge for owning a tv... & Youtube is a better alternative... BUT... I can not believe that you are 78 and I do not mean that in any sense that would upset all the issues that people can become upset about...
I have a wide background in supporting Indy... and feel betrayed not only by the propaganda that they pump out to keep the house jocks happy ... but by our so called Indy political class... they must know the difference in living standards between Oil rich Norway and the third world infrastructure we take as normal in Scotland.. and yet they only make pretty wee speeches ... which makes me wonder as to who their paymasters are.. simply... I do not trust them.
Devolution was always going to be a dead end. The FM's chief of staff is Whitehall approved as are all the civil servants. Power devolved, is power retained. Furthermore, the SNP has, of course, been infiltrated by MI5 and the British State, and they haven't stopped there. These guys are everywhere, sticking their noses into all sorts of groups here that may have a chance to get us out of this rotten union. Their mission is to keep Scotland in the failing union no matter what because the UK can't afford to lose our resources which are keeping their corrupt and failing state afloat - for the time being. The UK will fail. Question is - will Scotland fail alongside it?
Its a pity that the US of A could not demonstrate the same logic to stage a 'coup' in Scotland. To rid ourselves of the colonial asset stripper that seems to believe that they are somehow doing Scots a favour by removing most of our assets to their singular benefit... and then in order to satisfy their appearance in the global stage.... they decided that they should return some of their legally removed assets in the form of a handout that in NO WAY reflects the true value of these assets... and you only have to take the obvious wealth of Norway as a prime example.
So instead of spluttering on about the Ukrainian situation ... our dear " leaders " should be on the streets and screaming about this blatant assisted robbery rather than leave it quiet until the next election rolls around... or the one after that... or the one after that .....
The proxy war was lost - or should have been - last year. But the US and its stupid allies, led by the UK, supported by the SNP (ffs) have, instead of talking peace with Putin, brought the clock closer to midnight than ever before. I should think the Hootsmon only gives this guy a column because the SNP these days is very pro-NATO. So, as well as being promoters not of independence but (much more important!) gender madness the SNP supports Armageddon. But these hacks enjoy their perks. Imagine being "taught" by this hack.
I do not see how you can support Scottish independence on one hand and Russia’s triumph in Ukraine on the other. If self-determination is a valid principle, must it not be universally?
Calum, please try to understand the history of the Ukraine conflict. It was a war that was entirely preventable. The US/NATO started it in 2014 with its coup against a democratically elected leader. Actually, the seeds of the conflict date back to 2008, when George W Bush said Ukraine would become a NATO member. This was the brightest of red lines for Russia. I've said many times before that if Russia placed spy stations and missiles on Canadian or Mexican soil, the US would not tolerate it. Why doesn't the same standard apply to Russia? Does it not have a right to security, too?
It certainly would appear the whole saga is not as clear cut or simple as the 'media' and politicians like to make out, and of course wars waged by the rich and powerful never are and it's always always innocent people who are considered collateral, who are slaughtered at will. The US in particular have form in wrecking other countries' ability to determine their soveriegnty, but others are involved as well of course. Money.
What a mess humans have made, it's so sad. Sorry kids of the future, the war mongers are winning I'm afraid and they might not leave you a planet to live on, certainly not safely or one worth having anyway.
The Ukrainian people have been sold down the river by a bunch of neo-Nazi thugs. There were so many opportunities for peace but each time the US said Nyet to negotiations and peace deals offered by Russia. Boris Johnson went to Kiev - on the orders of the US - in March 2022 to tell Zelensky not to sign the Istanbul peace deal that was negotiated and would have ended the conflict.
I don't blame Russia a bit. The whole thing is a huge tragedy. It didn't need to happen.
Maybe Russia and the US should have a proper war between themselves, you know.......? cut out the proxies. Either that or grow the f*ck up.
Great idea, but I don’t think Israel would let them get away with that. I’m beginning to think that they are the ones in charge.
Yep. The Zionist lobby/billionaires are calling all the shots

Thank you immensely Leah to opening my eyes to the background of this horrific war and waste of lives, money, environment

Dear oh dearie me.
Gethins another spineless uneducated non person.
Typical of the wee folk in the rood .
No respect for Russia a country steeped in history and sacrifice , if it wasn't for the Russian folk we would be speaking German.
In an occupied zone.
Being a full on independista , I'm embarrassed by those traitors .
I cannot bring myself to listen to them .
They've blown any form of respectability.

And recall that the west recognised how corrupt the Ukraine regime was prior to 2022 - https://www.theguardian.com/news/2015/feb/04/welcome-to-the-most-corrupt-nation-in-europe-ukraine. It's a reason the EU couldn't possibly countenance Ukraine becoming and EU member state unless it cleaned up its act. The Zelensky regime is even more corrupt. He and his henchmen have been skimming off billions from US/NATO/EU funds. https://www.firstpost.com/world/cia-aware-of-widespread-corruption-in-ukraine-embezzlement-of-us-aid-claims-seymour-hersh-12448952.html
Now it pretends as though Zelensky is some kind of democratic hero fighting off the nasty Russian bear? Give me a break.

Of course the points made about NATO membership being a red line and corruption are valid. I do not dispute those.
However, I do not see how Russia’s “right to security” means that Ukrainians must lose theirs.
