The UK nuclear industry lobby is as powerful as it gets and has long infiltrated the Labour Party. The CEO of the Nuclear Industry Association is ex Labour Minster for Energy, Tom Greatrex.
By coincidence, ex Labour Minster for Energy, Brian Wilson CBE is a non executive director of the biggest private nuclear services business, AMEC Nuclear Holdings Ltd.

Between 1982 and 1990, 25 people associated with the industry, in particular GEC-Marconi, died in mysterious circumstances. One of those may have been the SNP lawyer Willie McRae.
Tremendously good article as ever Leah, your coffee's in the post.
I'm not wholly opposed to nuclear in a base load capacity but only when Thorium reactors can be fully developed into a practical concept.
Given they can use waste, and most importantly NOT produce Plutonium, they should at least be considered.
Meantime, with Scotland sitting on probably millions of tons of coal there is no rational reason why we should not be using it, given the advanced processes that can be incorporated to minimise the environmental impact. If Scotland is to have a chance of re industrialising post - colonisation then we need to use and correctly husband out own indigenous energy sources. The idea that we can do everything from renewables is Magical Thinking driven by an outdated ideology. Renewables undeniably have an important place, it's true but they need to be realistically considered as part of a wider portfolio. Hydro also has untapped potential though that may come at an environmental cost also.
We should of course be concerned at the Brits' plans for us as there is always an ulterior motive for them and viewed from that perspective I fully understand the concerns here.
The Brits only want to increase Plutonium production and power their surveillance networks.
There is a lot that can be done in Scotland and it isn't being done simply because the SNP actively working for the UK government and has been since Sturgeon became FM.
<<<<The renewables industry also creates skilled jobs for life without shortening it - in engineering, project management, data analysis and renewable energy technologies - and doesn’t endanger the health of workers or the local community.>>>>
How many of these skilled jobs are in the areas where the wind blows I wonder? How many in Scotland and the Wider UK? I live with a great many wind turbines and our local community get only a small amount of funds from it. Otherwise everyone else is some form of city type coming in, doing work and going away. Sure, our village hall is in tip top condition but the community that might use it is becoming a retirement home. No jobs here just wind, wires and turbines.
It's true what you say. Scotland would need to nationalise energy and give priority to Scots for available jobs. If we had a system of decentralised direct democracy, the regions and municipalities would have a strong voice which is currently missing.
I'm happy to see you agree that there's a problem with the way it works. I hae ma doots that the solution you suggest would do anything to stop us being ignored and excluded by another bureaucracy maybe with a Scottish accent.
Honestly, if you came close to suggesting a solution that didn't have a local version of Holyrood apparatchiks talking down to us like we were idiots then I'm listening. I hae ma doots.
The effects of EMF upon living tissue are still not fully understood but at lot more attention needs to be given to the effects of hyper-electrification on the environment before we are in a position to declare it entirely safe. It is, after all, just another form of radiation.
